The highway network in India makes up only 2 per cent of the countrys total road network, but carries about 40 per cent of the total road traffic.The ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) aims to construct 40 km of highways every day in the current financial year. Despite the ongoing pandemic, the country has exceeded the target for highway construction for financial year 2021. India had constructed 13,505 km of National Highways till 31 March, 2021. The Government is focussing on the development of infrastructure, and has set a target of road construction of worth Rs15 lakh crore in next two years. India has already awarded 13,000 km length of roads involving an investment of Rs 3.3 trillion under the Rs 5.35 trillion Bharatmala project.
