On Kavaratti Island in Lakshadweep, the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), based in Chennai, proposes to construct the world’s first desalination plant driven by ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC). The project has received approval from the Union Environment Ministry’s expert appraisal group. This will be the first publically used prototype in the world for using naturally occurring ocean temperature gradients to produce power and fresh water simultaneously.
