The West Bengal government’s Rs 1,500 crore Ghatal master plan, a massive project to strengthen the embankments of at least 10 important rivers in the state, recently received approval from the Central Government. 60% of the cost will be borne by the Union government, with the remaining 40% by the state government. The project involves dredging the riverbeds and strengthening the embankments of 10 significant rivers, including the Rupnarayan, Shilabati, and Kansabati, as well as a few canals in the districts of Purba and Paschim Medinipur.
