The Kerala government intends to develop an overall master plan for the West Coast Canal Project. The Kerala Waterways and Infrastructure Ltd (KWIL), a special purpose vehicle founded for the rejuvenation of the state’s inland waterways, made a total of 520 km of canal network navigable in the first phase. The Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) has already sanctioned works in various segments of the canal totaling ?1,170 crore. The second phase entails bringing state waterways up to national standards. In addition, the government plans to build a tourist village every 25-30 kilometres along the river to promote diverse cultural and entertainment programmes. The project is scheduled to start in 2026.
