Floatiing Solar Power Plant

NTPC Commissions 92 MW Floating Solar Power Project at Kayamkulam

For the installation of floating solar projects totaling 22 MW and 70 MW at the Rajiv Gandhi Combined Cycle Power Project in Kayamkulam, NTPC had issued two separate tenders. In September 2019, NTPC awarded Tata Power Solar to setup the 70 MW floating solar project. BHEL received the EPC for the 22 MW projects, which was commissioned in March 2022. Tata Power Solar completed 70 MW floating solar project in June 2022, and with this NTPC has commissioned 92 MW Floating Solar Power Project in the waterbodies of the Rajiv Gandhi Combined Cycle Power Project (RGCCPP) at NTPC Kayamkulam in the state of Kerala. This was recently followed by completion of 100 MW Ramagundam Floating Solar PV Project by NTPC at Ramagundam, Telangana. NTPC Kayamkulam floating solar plant is one of the largest floating solar power plant under operation in the country. With the commissioning of this plant, the NTPC Group’s installed Renewable Energy capacity has crossed 2 GW. The floating solar power plant has come over 450 acres and can cut down 1,73,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) buys electricity from the floating solar project at Rs 3.16 per unit. The project had cost Rs 465 crore. A total of 2.16 lakh solar panels are mounted on floaters for this project. The state of Kerala hosts a large number of waterbodies and there is immense space to set up more such floating solar power projects and generate green energy.
