Government of India
India aims to achieve the target of 50 per cent share of energy from non-fossil fuels and also the 500-GW renewable energy capacity before the deadline of 2030. So far, the country has achieved 39 per cent of energy share from non-fossil fuels. By 2030, India will have around 450 GW from solar and wind, while 70-100 GW will be from hydropower plants. The government is already making use of RPO (renewable purchase obligation) policy to push for increasing the share of RE in the energy mix. Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) is a mechanism by which the State Electricity Regulatory Commissions oblige entities to purchase a certain percentage of power from renewable energy sources. The RPO mechanism is applicable till 2022 and is likely to be extended to 2030.
