The Southern Railway is constructing the third railway line between Tambaram and Chengalpattu covering a distance of 29-km. So far, the Guduvanchery-Chengalpattu covering 18 kms stretch has been completed and commissioned. The work for laying the 11 km portion from Tambaram to Guduvancheri is progressing fast and is in the final stage. The work is likely to complete by the end of May 2021. The project construction had started in 2015 at a cost of Rs 256 crore. The project comprises building three major bridges on Chennai-Trichy bypass road and 73 minor bridges covering 11 stations.
