The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has embarked on a pioneering venture to explore the feasibility of a 136km metro rail link connecting Virar to Alibaug in Mumbai. Forming an integral part of the Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor, slated for completion by 2030, this metro line will serve as a vital link between key suburbs, mirroring the trajectory of the multimodal corridor. Following the feasibility study, a comprehensive project report will be compiled, with the location of the car depot yet to be finalized. There is a possibility that the state government may assign the project to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). As part of the ambitious ?55,000 crore corridor project, envisioned as a 14-lane expressway with a speed capacity of 120 kmph, the metro rail will be executed in two phases: Phase 1 will encompass a 98.5-km highway segment from Navghar to Balavali, succeeded by Phase 2 covering a 129.9-km stretch from Balavali to Alibaug.
