Indian Railways is embarking on a transformative endeavor, set to craft 8,000 Vande Bharat coaches in the forthcoming years. These semi-high speed trainsets are a strategic enhancement to the rail network. While a typical Vande Bharat Express trainset encompasses 16 coaches, it can flexibly operate with eight coaches as per route needs.
Approximately two-thirds of the envisioned 8,000 coaches will be procured from the industry through established manufacturing and maintenance contracts. This strategic alignment mirrors the Railways Ministry’s sanctioned coach production program for the year. Noteworthy is the estimated cost of a 16-coach trainset, standing at roughly Rs 130 crore.
The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, celebrated as the birthplace of Vande Bharat, has secured authorization to solicit tenders for 3,200 sleeper variant Vande Bharat coaches. While existing Vande Bharat trains are exclusively seating variants, this marks a notable shift. Manufacturing distribution allocates 1,600 coaches to ICF, while the remaining two production units, MCF-Raebareli and RCF-Kapurthala, are each tasked with manufacturing 800 coaches. This comprehensive strategy envisages annual trainset rollouts, culminating in the ambitious target completion by 2030-31.
