Coal India and GAIL India have formed a joint venture, Coal Gas India, to develop a coal-to-synthetic natural gas (SNG) project in the Eastern Coalfields. The JV, a subsidiary of Coal India, has an authorized share capital of ?11 crore and an initial paid-up capital of ?1 lakh. The project aims to establish infrastructure for coal processing into SNG, including captive coal mining, beneficiation, imports, and equipment procurement. Coal India holds a 51% stake, while GAIL owns 49%, combining their expertise in coal mining and gas distribution. The initiative aligns with Indias strategy to promote cleaner energy sources, enhance domestic energy security, and reduce reliance on imported natural gas, while also supporting the government’s push for coal gasification.
