The Jammu and Kashmir government plans to double its hydel power generation capacity, as only 23.81% of its identified potential has been harnessed, according to the Economic Survey Report (ESR) 2024-25. Out of J&K’s estimated 18,000 MW hydro potential, 14,867 MW has been identified, but only 3,540.15 MW is currently utilized. To bridge this gap, four hydropower projects are under development: the 1,000 MW Pakal Dul, 850 MW Rattle-II, 624 MW Kiru, and 540 MW Kwar, adding a combined capacity of 3,014 MW.
