Western Railway (WR) is embarking on an ambitious plan to extend the harbour line by 8km from Goregaon to Borivli in two phases, with a target completion deadline of 2027-28. This extension aims to alleviate congestion on the Andheri-Borivli section, known for its heavy traffic on WR. Tenders for the Rs 825-crore project are set to be floated in May, with work likely commencing around June 15. The first phase will cover a 2km stretch between Goregaon and Malad, expected to open by 2026-27, while the final phase will extend over 5km from Malad to Borivli, projected for completion by 2027-28. WR has initiated preliminary work, including geotechnical investigations, surveys, and land acquisition, with approximately 1,900sqm of land to be acquired across 20 locations, primarily from private owners. This project marks a significant expansion effort to enhance rail connectivity and ease commuting challenges in Mumbai’s bustling western suburbs.
