Coal Ministry PSUs are diversifying their revenue streams by adding 6,640 MW of coal-based power generation capacity, requiring an investment of over ₹60,300 crore. The plan aims for these capacities to be operational by FY 2028-2029. To achieve this, the Ministry has advised Coal India (CIL) to locate suitable coal-free areas for setting up pit-head Thermal Power Plants (TPPs). This approach is economically beneficial, with an estimated fixed cost of around ₹2.5 per unit and a variable cost of about ₹1.25 per unit. The move is driven by the expected surplus of coal in the future and aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of operations for both CIL and NLC India (NLCIL) through the establishment of these TPPs.
