Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the largest fuel retailer in India, has announced its ambitious plan to convert 50 percent of its refinery hydrogen to green hydrogen by 2030. IOC is determined to ensure that half of the total hydrogen consumed by its refiners by 2030 undergoes the transformation from gray to green. This conversion target amounts to 700,000 metric tonnes per annum (mtpa) by 2030, with 350,000 mtpa being produced as green hydrogen within IOC’s refineries. To achieve this objective, IOC is spearheading the establishment of the country’s inaugural commercial-scale green hydrogen plant at the Panipat refinery, which will boast a capacity of 7,000 mtpa.

In addition to this groundbreaking development, IOC is actively working on a demonstration project at its R&D Centre in Faridabad. This project incorporates an enhanced biomass gasification pathway and an efficient purification system, which will complement the technology used to produce green hydrogen. By investing in these advancements, IOC aims to further refine its green hydrogen production processes and pave the way for a sustainable and eco-friendly future in the energy sector.
