The Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is adopting various methods of monetizing national highway assets to support infrastructure development. Minister Gadkari shared that the government has allocated a budget of Rs 4.5 lakh crore to construct approximately 10,000 km of greenfield expressway projects across India. These projects are part of the larger Bharatmala Pariyojana, under which the entire road network has been constructed.
NHAI is leveraging different approaches for asset monetization, including project-based financing, toll-operate-transfer (ToT), and Infrastructure Investment Trusts (InVITs). By monetizing national highway assets, the NHAI has generated over Rs 70,000 crore through various financing means. These funds will be utilized to develop new highway projects and enhance the country’s road infrastructure.
The government’s visionary Bharatmala Pariyojana aims to develop a comprehensive network of 65,000 km of highways spanning the entire country. As part of this initiative, the construction of 10,000 km of greenfield expressways has been prioritized, with an estimated cost of Rs 4.5 lakh crore.
