The Union Finance Minister unveiled the 20232024 budget, which outlined seven goals. 500 new Waste-to-Wealth facilities will be built as part of the GOBARdhan programme to promote the circular economy in the area of green growth. A total of Rs 10,000 Cr will be invested in these, which will include 200 compressed biogas facilities, 75 in urban areas, and 300 community or cluster-based plants. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with Engineers India Limited to build waste-to-energy and biomethanation projects in cities with a million or more residents. India has more than 59 million cities, including, to name a few, Lucknow, Kanpur, Bareilly, Nasik, Thane, Nagpur, Gwalior, Chennai, Madurai, and Coimbatore. In these more than one million cities, bio-methanation plants have been proposed for the treatment of the organic/wet part of municipal solid waste. In the first phase, 25 million plus cities will be selected for developing large-scale waste processing plants. EIL will handhold Urban local bodies (ULBs) in carrying out monitoring process of the waste-to-energy PPP projects during the construction phase and will assist in obtaining statutory approvals.
