To make cities into “sustainable cities of tomorrow,” states and cities will be urged to implement urban planning changes and initiatives. This entails the effective use of land resources, sufficient funding for urban infrastructure, development that is transit-oriented, increased accessibility and affordability of urban land, and opportunities for all. During her presentation of the Union Budget 202324 to the Parliament on February 1, 2023, Union Finance & Corporate Affairs Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman made this statement. An Urban Infrastructure Development Fund (UIDF) will be established through use of priority sector lending shortfall. This will be managed by the National Housing Bank, and will be used by public agencies to create urban infrastructure in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities.
