Under the National Waterways Act, 2016, which took effect on April 12, 2016, 111 waterways (including 5 existing and 106 new) were designated as National Waterways (NWs) to enhance inland water transportation in the country. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) has found 25 NWs viable for cargo/passenger transportation based on the results of techno-economic feasibility and Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) of NWs. In 13 out of 25 NWs, developmental activities have begun.
