Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) was launched in 2014 with the twin objective of making urban India Open defecation Free (OPF) along with 100% scientific solid waste management. According to Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of State (I/C), Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) almost all of urban India is today ODF and scientific processing of solid waste, which stood at a mere 18% at the start of the Mission in 2014, has more than tripled and now stands at 65%. The Centre has issued an advisory on reclaiming landfill sites in urban areas through an effective solid waste management process, thus suggesting to Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to treat and dispose of solid waste through an environment-friendly bioremediation process.
